Free Training for NYC Perinatal Care Providers

Learn to screen for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders easily and effectively

Seleni psychotherapist Sarah Best, LMSW, in conjunction with the borough of Brooklyn, will lead a training session on screening for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs). We invite ob-gyns, midwives, pediatricians, doulas and anyone who works closely with pregnant and postpartum women in New York City to come learn simple and effective ways to help women and families.

PMADs, such as postpartum depression and anxiety, are the most common complication of pregnancy. They affect up to 20 percent of mothers, yet women are rarely screened for these very treatable conditions. Left untreated, a mother's postpartum depression can develop into chronic depression and impair her child’s cognitive and emotional development. Health care providers can play a critical role in improving maternal mental health by screening women for postpartum depression and anxiety and referring them to effective treatment.

In this informative and engaging talk, Ms. Best will review the causes and symptoms of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders as well as identify the main barriers to patient screening and disclosures. She will also share advice for educating patients about PMADs, tips on screening, and practical strategies for beginning the treatment referral process. Health care providers will learn the tools they need to start helping patients right away.
